The new Ruby Hunt augmented reality game brings Moomin characters to life at Helsinki Airport. It’s free and fun for both kids and adult fans of Moomins.

Forget Pokémon. At Helsinki Airport, you can now go on an augmented reality adventure with the beloved Moomin characters, created by Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson. In the new Ruby Hunt AR game, passengers get to help Moomintroll fix his broken ruby by going on a treasure hunt around the airport.

We wanted to introduce Moomin Coffee – a café we opened last year on the airport’s non-Schengen side – and the Moomin characters also in other parts of the airport. The idea for Ruby Hunt came from brainstorming about fun activities we could offer passengers while they wait for their flight,” says Tia Wills from restaurant operator SSP Finland.

The treasure hunt game is free, and you can play it both in the non-Schengen and Schengen areas of the airport.

“It’s fun for passengers and Moomin fans of all ages, but, of course, especially for families with kids. Even toddlers can go ruby hunting with their parents,” says Wills.

Here’s how to play Ruby Hunt:

  1. Download the free Arilyn AR app on your phone or tablet.

  1. In the app, you’ll find a map that shows where you can find the ruby treasures. You can also get a printed version of the map from any SSP restaurant at Helsinki Airport.

  1. Find a Ruby Hunt poster near the passenger gates marked on the map. (Tip! The posters are located in restaurant areas.)

  1. Scan the poster with the Arilyn app and you’ll see an augmented reality scene of Moomintroll fixing his broken ruby.

Ruby Hunt is the first augmented reality game that features Moomin characters.

“The game has received great feedback so far. It offers a fun, new activity for families at the airport,” says Wills.
The Ruby Hunt game was created in cooperation between the Moomin Characters company, restaurant operator SSP Finland, 3D gaming company Zoan and AR application Arilyn.

Finavia was also involved in overseeing the plans and making sure they work with other airport operations. The cooperation with the airport has been smooth,” says Janne Virtanen, Business Development and Client Relationship Manager at SSP Finland.
